The End of Disease – Extraordinary Developments in Biomedicine and Their Implications for Humanity” by Professor Roger D. Kornberg, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry
Chiang Mai University, in collaboration with the International Peace Foundation (IPF), organized the JAPAN-ASEAN BRIDGES Event Series. This special lecture focused on the topic “The End of Disease – Extraordinary Developments in Biomedicine and Their Implications for Humanity” delivered by Professor Roger D. Kornberg, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry from the School of Medicine, Stanford University. The aim of the lecture was to provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experiences in medical science among scientists, researchers, medical personnel, students, and the general public. Prof. Pongruk Sribanditmongkol, M.D., Ph.D., the President of Chiang Mai University, delivered the welcoming speech at the Northern Science and Technology Park, Chiang Mai University, on Friday, December 8, 2023, alongside Chiang Mai University administrators.
Professor Roger D. Kornberg, a biochemist and professor of structural biology at Stanford University, received the Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 2006. His groundbreaking work revolves around unraveling the molecular basis for decoding the genetics of eukaryotic cells (Eukaryotic Transcription), shedding light on the process of information storage, copying, and transmission within cells to produce proteins. This research provides insights into the occurrence of diseases resulting from errors in genetic decoding, offering potential avenues for new approaches in treating cancer, heart disease, and various types of inflammation.
While recent efforts have somewhat mitigated the challenges posed by COVID-19, global awareness of the threats posed by climate change and ongoing pandemics persists. Concerns persist within public health and policy domains, indicating the potential emergence of more dangerous epidemics that could threaten the world’s population. Professor Roger D. Kornberg’s presentation highlights a promising solution for preparing for and mitigating the impact of future pandemics. His guidelines offer intelligent strategies to empower individuals worldwide, enabling them to safeguard their health sustainably, with minimal resources and hassle.
